Spammers Lose Interest
February 8th, 2010 by danwdooley

Now this is interesting but of course very predictable.  As I noted in a previous post, if you own a message forum or a blog, the spammers will come calling.  On the pretext of offering comments to your forums, they’ll offer some nonsense statement or phrase and of course while “logging in” to post their comments they’ll add in addition to a fake email address (since an email address is generally required to submit a post) and – the reason they’re posting in the first place – the URL link to some site they’re intending to promote or build backlinks to.

I was receiving on average a couple of comments per day.  Without exception it was easy to see the intent of these submissions.  They were all spam in nature.  I made a change to the comments submission process.  The email address field is still there as is the comments field.  A legitimate comment can be submitted, just as before.  What is different is that the web site field is gone.  A person desiring to comment on one of my blog articles is no longer offered the opportunity to include a web site URL.

Funny thing now.  I have not had one comment submission since.  Coincidence?  Come on now.
